Yoake to Hotaru (Dawn and Fireflies) by n-buna

Charmed by the pale light of moon,
I can’t even see my feet in this darkness.
As the distant stars begin to glimmer,
I don’t even notice when I stumble.

Not finding what I want to do,
I keep my head down and pretend I'm in a hurry.
Even when they laughed after I fell,
I pretended not to notice and moved on.

Depicting the morning with a shapeless song,
Gazing towards a faint, faint summer.
I saw the warm palm of your hand,
The pale dawn sky, and fireflies.

All the things I hate keep piling up,
It feels like I’m just a stain on this world.
I want to fly to the ends of the Earth,
Until I reach a deserted station.

Until I can meet up with my past self.

Facing downwards when my heart aches,
You’re still so, so far ahead of me.
Give us dreamers a reality check,
And bid farewell to last night’s blooming, flaming flowers.

After seeing those flowers, those flowers reflected the water
After seeing the moon, the moon rippling in the water

If I painted a sky where summer never comes
Would that get a smile out of you?
In my dreams, I saw the moon floating in the dawn sky

If the morning never comes, as long as I can breathe
I can look towards that faint, faint summer.
I saw the warm palm of your hand,
The pale morning glow in the night sky.

In this town where summer hasn’t come
Aah, the dark dawn sky and fireflies.

I originally envisioned this blog as focusing on obscure songs that nobody but me would ever bother to translate… so why am I doing n-buna’s classic “Yoake to Hotaru”, with tens of millions of views and plenty of translations out there? Simply put, I’ve been focusing more on singing and going down the path of a cover singer. I uploaded my first music video recently, and I’m quite happy with it! However, for that song in particular I used someone else’s translation. It was a rough translation by an (at the time) inexperienced translator, so I ended up having to make a lot of changes myself. I’m lucky someone else even got around to translating that song at all, but it made me think that there’s really no reason to use someone else’s words when I have the Japanese to do it myself, and give my videos an even more personal touch. Also doesn’t hurt to have more practice, and I even have other translations to compare my own work to! Seeing different word choices, what’s emphasized, how loose or how literal you can get… That’s really the fun of translation for me!

Yoru No Mushi (Nightbug) by Hamaguchi Kuranosuke

English Translation

Bug, bug, lovebug, nightbug.
The nightbug who sleeps all day,
and lives off of only smokes, drinks, and love.
A-ah, nightbug.

He wakes up when the sun goes down, and the bars begin to open
A nightbug who calls on everyone to join in the fun
He drinks the night away with a side of romance
A-ah, drinks the night away

The nightbug makes women cry with his ghastly expression
Another night of making people cry, and crying himself
A dark tear rolls down his cheek
A-ah, rolls down his cheek

Speaking in truth, lies, and nonsense
The nightbug doesn’t know anything
But from experience, he understands a little about love
A-ah, nightbug.

There’s one more nightbug here tonight
A lonesome nightbug, sitting in his dark corner,
Just sipping at his drink.
A-ah, nightbug.

Nobody knows where this nightbug came from
Or why they wear such a cold expression
There’s a woman peeking in, she’s a nightbug too
A-ah, nightbug.

Anyone who knows me knows I love bugs. So when I found a song titled “Nightbug” when looking through rental CDs, I was curious. This was interesting to research. from what I can tell the original was written and performed by Hamaguchi Kuranosuke, but his version was impossible to track down online. The one most widespread cover is performed by Mino Monta, a popular television host who put an okinawan twist on this for some reason. This is the version you can find at Karaoke. Aside from that, there’s a uprising number of covers from the 80s available on Youtube, with the Haya Bonpei cover linked at the top being my personal favorite.

English Lyrics
If I reach out just a bit further, it feels like I can reach you
I see your lovely face through the hail of bullets
Even if you ignore me, that won’t get me down
I’ll shoot my feelings your way!

Bug out! Bug out! (Push! Push! Push! Push! Just keep pushing!)
Just a bit closer! (Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! It's just bugs!)
Bug out! Bug out! (Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Just keep firing!)
Wriggle out! Go crazy! (I’m not hearing tonight’s BUG BEAT!)

Aah, in this bug-riddled world
It’s the story of the never-ending night
A nightbug awaits in the dark,
Who cares if the morning never comes!

These feelings are too much to bear,
There are no words for this love
Whether it's dawn or dusk
I can’t give up, on this Imperishable Night!!

In just one careless moment, you struck
You got me with that lovely face and a kick
Even though my head’s still spinning
I’m dodging with everything I've got!

Bug out, Bug out! (Cheer! Cheer! Cheer! Cheer! Just keep cheering!)
Please look this way! (Ignore! Ignore! Ignore! Ignore! Just look away!)
Bug out, Bug out! (Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire! Just keep firing!)
Wriggle out! Go crazy! (I’m not hearing tonight’s BUG BEAT!)

Aah, in this bug-riddled world
Everything you know goes out the window
Close the distance, get a lucky hit!
That bug has got to be a boy!

I didn’t know love was this precious
How can I possibly let it out?
I’ll stuff it in my bug cage,
look towards the other side, and go!

Aah, in this bug-covered world
before the dawn of this never-ending night
A rather strong lunatic awaits,
But beating her will be a piece of cake!

What’s with this fleeting feeling?
I can’t just keep grazing this love
Whether it’s dawn or dusk
I won’t give up, on this Imperishable Night!!

As you might expect, I’m a huge fan of fireflies. I’m also a huge fan of Touhou, so naturally my favorite character is Wriggle Nightbug. This particular track was released last year with the mobile rhythm game Touhou Danmaku Kagura. After almost a year and nobody else getting to this, figured it was time to step up to the plate myself. This is a fun song too, you’ve got the homonyms 押せ(push)/推せ(support), 虫(bug)/無視(ignore), 待宵(a night waiting for someone)/まぁ強い(fairly strong, somewhat strong).

All in all, I feel pretty good about this translation. And in a stroke of luck, another Wriggle song was released for Kagura just last week. While it’s an older song that’s already been translated, I appreciate any love that she can get.

Special thanks to my Japanese tutor Ishikawa Atsuko, who assisted with some of the finer details. She’s available for lessons at Sensei Shokai (login required)

Hoshikuzu no Pipeline (Stardust Pipeline) by Junk Fujiyama

English Translation
We’re always on the search for the wonders of the universe
Soaring through space, devoted entirely to our dream
I’m searching for my future self, paving the way to tomorrow
Embracing this unending, heart pounding excitement

Bursting out of the the pipeline in a shower of stardust,
I saw the whole universe spread out before me
All this pain twisting my heart will fade away
I’ll soar over everything, from now until the end of this infinite journey.

I saw all our memories in the palm of my hand.
Even though you’re gone, I can still catch an unexpected glimmer
of your smile.
That vow of love we made under the starry sky,
I still hold it in my heart, and hide all this pain with a sigh.

Bursting out of the pipeline following behind a comet
To continue our cycle of meeting and parting.
The inescapable loneliness of my heart will heal.
I’m soaring over everything with no restraint, from now until the end of this
infinite journey.

I'm searching for my future self, paving the way to tomorrow,
Embracing this unending, heart pounding excitement

Bursting out of the the pipeline in a shower of stardust,
I saw the whole universe spread out before me.
All this pain twisting my heart will fade away.
Our paths both connect connect to the future, from now until the end of this
infinite journey.

There we go, a translation of Hoshikuzu no Pipeline uploaded for the first time to a page. I went into this really hoping to qualify that with “translated for the frist time ever”. I’m a big fan of Space Dandy, and who can forget that incredible ending to episode 6? Turn’s it it’s me, I rewatched the episode after finishing this project and had somehow completely forgotten the first verse and chorus were translated in the show. It was a little discouraging, but nice to see the comparison. I’ve practiced a few times on already translated songs to see how accurate I was, but it’s different going for this one not knowing there was a bit of a safety net all along. Check out the show for yourself to see how things differ, if you’ve seen it before you’re due for a rewatch anyways.

Until next time, see you Space Dandies…

Sake Yo by Yoshi Ikuzo – Lyrics and Translation

There are many memories in these tears,
along with a few wounds in my heart.

Pouring a drink for myself while listening to enka,
a sentimental drink, just like that night,
once in a while does me good.

When I think back on those days, I remember our ship full of dreams
and how we sailed it into stormy waters.

Pouring myself a man's drink, while listening to enka.
Ah, sake!
You understand, don't you?

I just want to drink my fill until sleep takes me.
Men will always have tomorrow, you know?

Pouring myself a drink, while listening to enka and making excuses.
I love you, and always will.
At least sake understands how I feel.

Pouring myself a drink, while listening to enka and making excuses.
I love you, and always will.
At least this sake knows how I feel.
At least this sake knows how I feel.

That took longer than expected! This song is a textbook example of the Japanese genre known as Enka, sentimental ballads that I can’t get enough of. There’s another English translation that’s easy to find on google, but unfortunately it’s complete nonsense.

I actually had most of the work on this finished at the end of October, when I sang this in front of everyone for our School Festival. I sat on it for a while, polished it up last week, and spent a few hours trying to get the formatting just right. Unfortunately the free version of WordPress isn’t cut out for what I had in mind… I prefer to have the lyrics side by side in columns, but nothing I tried could get it looking that way without compromise for the site layout or for mobile phones. It’s something I’d like to tackle sometime, but for now enjoy the translation and look forward to the next song!

Snake Eater (Japanese Version) – Lyrics and Translation

Snake Eater (Japanese Version)
Performed by Wada Akiko

Alone, wandering through the darkness of the night
I'm calling out, melting into your response.
Hearing your whispers
is driving my heart to madness.

Snake Eater

I'll sacrifice everything
even if this love is too much to survive
Even if I'm completely destroyed
I won't show my tears, Snake Eater

The two of us standing in the rain,
my scar glistens and shines.
Even if I won't get to see tomorrow
I believe in us, and have no fear.

Snake Eater

I'll sacrifice everything
even if this love is too much to survive
Even if I'm completely destroyed
This is my will, Snake Eater

I’m still in a dream
Snake Eater

For my first post, I decided to go with something short and sweet. This is a jazzy Japanese cover of Snake Eater theme done by Wada Akiko for “Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater – The First Bite”, a Japanese exclusive promotional cd released a little before the game itself. It left an immediate impression on me, and I actually completed this translation when I was an English teacher in 2016 and just sat on it until now. Looks like since then there’s still no translation out, so here it is for everyone’s enjoyment!

For such a short song the biggest challenge was deciding the point of view of the lyrics. With such a deep voice I assumed (incorrectly) that it was a male singer, and at first went with the assumption that this was sung from Snake’s perspective. This just didn’t fit with the lyrics, but once I looked to the English version and tried to write it from the Boss’ perspective things clicked from there. My Japanese is still pretty shaky and there’s a few spots I’m not happy with, if you have any other interpretations or suggestions please leave a comment!

Well, I’ve had this in mind for years. I’ve been studying Japanese for near 8 years now, and actually completed my first translation way back in 2014. However I wasn’t particularly happy with the result, and in the end just sat on it while my Japanese study and interest in translation languished. However, now that I’m back in Japan (for the third time) and have a vague idea that I could do this professionally, figured I could finally get something out there and get the ball rolling.

Right now my main focus is on translating songs. I’m a fan of uncovering the more obscure or unknown, but that also means a lot of a lot of what I like lacks any documentation in English, let alone a translation. Sometimes all that’s out there is a single blog post, so I’d like to pay it forward myself.

Special thanks to Joe for inspiring me with his own translation experience and giving me the push/pep talk needed to finally make this happen.
